Basti, also known as Basti karma or Vasti, is an important therapeutic procedure in Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine from India. It involves the administration of medicated enemas to eliminate toxins, balance doshas (bioenergies), and promote overall health and well-being. Basti is one of the Panchakarma therapies, a set of five cleansing and rejuvenating procedures aimed at restoring harmony in the body.
Procedure:
- Preparation: Before administering the enema, the patient undergoes preparatory therapies such as Snehana (oleation therapy) and Swedana (sudation therapy). These preparatory steps help to loosen toxins and move them towards the colon for elimination.
- Administration of Medicated Enema: A specially prepared herbal decoction or oil formulation is introduced into the rectum through the anus using a sterile enema apparatus. The composition of the enema solution is customized based on the individual’s constitution and health condition. The enema may contain herbs like triphala, Dashmool, Guduchi, sesame oil, or other ingredients known for their therapeutic properties.
- Retention Period: The patient is instructed to retain the enema solution for a specific duration, allowing the medicinal properties of the herbs to be absorbed by the colon. The duration of retention varies depending on the individual’s tolerance and the therapeutic goals.
- Elimination: After the retention period, the patient expels the enema solution along with accumulated toxins, waste materials, and excess doshas through bowel movements. This process helps to cleanse the colon, remove toxins, and restore balance in the body.
Types of Basti:
- Niruha Basti (Decoction Enema): This type of enema involves the use of a medicated decoction prepared by boiling herbs in water. It is primarily used for detoxification and balancing doshas.
- Anuvasana Basti (Oil Enema): In this type of enema, medicated oils or ghee (clarified butter) are administered into the rectum. Anuvasana Basti is nourishing and lubricating, promoting the health of the colon and nervous system.
