Nasya, also known as Nasya Karma, is a therapeutic procedure in Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine from India. It involves the administration of medicated oils, herbal extracts, or powders into the nostrils to promote cleansing, rejuvenation, and balance in the head and neck region. Nasya is considered one of the Panchakarma therapies, a set of five cleansing and rejuvenating procedures aimed at restoring health and harmony in the body.
Procedure:
- Preparation: Before administering Nasya, the patient undergoes preparatory therapies such as facial massage, steam therapy, and inhalation of herbal steam to loosen toxins and open up the nasal passages.
- Selection of Medications: Depending on the individual’s constitution and health condition, medicated oils, herbal extracts, or powders are selected for Nasya administration. These formulations may contain herbs like Brahmi, Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Guduchi, or other ingredients known for their therapeutic properties.
- Administration of Nasal Drops: The medicated preparation is instilled into each nostril drop by drop using a sterile dropper or nasal spray apparatus. The patient may inhale deeply during the process to facilitate the absorption of the medication into the nasal passages and sinuses.
- Massage and Steam: After Nasya administration, the patient may undergo gentle massage of the face, neck, and shoulders to further promote absorption and distribution of the medication. Steam therapy may also be provided to enhance the therapeutic effects and relieve congestion.
Types of Nasya:
- Pratimarsha Nasya (Daily Nasal Care): This type of Nasya involves the administration of a small amount of medicated oil or ghee into the nostrils on a daily basis to promote nasal hygiene and prevent dryness.
- Navana Nasya (Therapeutic Nasal Drops): Navana Nasya refers to the administration of medicated oils or herbal extracts specifically tailored to address certain health conditions such as sinusitis, headaches, allergies, or neurological disorders.
